Merlin is a benevolent Druid, master of the elemental and animal world. He has organized the birth of king Arthur using one of his spells, and helped him to become King of Britain. He is the King's counselor, as well as a guide for the Round Table Knights, the elite Order of Chivalry of Camelot. He foresees battles to come and tries to influence the outcomes of these, before retiring to the forest, to which he is widely associated.

He is often nicknamed: "The Enchanter". His name comes from the Latin "Merlinus", given by the Romans. The Welsh called him "Myrddin" and the Bretons "Merzhin" Moreover, in the end, it seems it was a title given to High Druids rather than a name. Go guess why?

Merlin's mother, a young virgin, was sexually assaulted by the Devil. Merlin was supposed to be the famous 'Anti-Christ', but the child turned to good instead of following his father's suggestions, and was saved by Blaise, confessor of Merlin's mother and later Master of philosophy and the arts of Merlin himself, and baptized him just in time. He then became enchanter, prophet, woodsman, animal tamer, sage, magician, elementalist. He is the patron of Nature in its original might, the standard of an eternal archetype. He also stands for Goodness and the world of Dreams, which he can interpret.

Thanks to his legendary wisdom, he became friend and advisor of King Uther Pendragon. Organizing Arthur's birth out of Uther's lust, he becomes Arthur's tutor. At the death of Uther, Merlin organized the challenge of The Sword in the Stone, which allowed Arthur, the illegitimate son of Uther, to succeed to his father. He then encourages Arthur to instore the Table Round so that knights who constitute it can quest for mythical missions noone else could partake, notably the all too famous Grail Quest. However, in spite of all his knowledge, Merlin could not do anything against Britain's destiny and the tragic end of King Arthur.

In a Christian world in progress, Merlin stood for the remains of the Old Ways, the druidic tradition. Soothsayer and Druid, according to the legend, he fell deeply in love with Vivian the fairy, to which he confided the secret to bond a man to oneself forever. She later undertook the magic, drawing 9 circles around Merlin as he was asleep. The magic was strong and Merlin has been trapped for eternity in his jail, the Tower of Air, at the greatest regrets of Vivian who did not believe such magic was possible.

Merlin was also often depicted as a lunatic old man (Myrddin Wyllt = Merlin the Crazy one) living as an hermit in the forest, often disheveled and roaming totally naked, moaning about the disasters that have befallen on his masters because of him. Some say that he was condemned to roam among wild animals because of his sins... Some say, he has many faces... Some say a lot of things about Merlin...

But if there is one thing no one should doubt is Merlin's keen sense for prophecies. He is also a famous shape changer - for himself as for others - and tree breeder.

King Arthur is a legendary British leader who led the defence of Britain against the Saxon invaders in the early 6th century, a great warrior defending Britain from human and supernatural enemies, some coming from the Welsh Otherworld, Annwn.

He is the fruit of a lustful union between his father Uther Pendragon and Igraine of Cornwalls. Uther, disguised as his enemy Gorlois by Merlin's magic, sleeps with Gorlois's wife Igerna at Tintagel, and she conceives Arthur. On Uther's death, the fifteen-year-old Arthur succeeds him as King of Britain. He also is tutee to Merlin, wielder of the sword Caliburn (later dubbed Ex-calibur), and establisher of an empire over Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Gaul. Fighting the Saxons took twelve famous battles that Arthur fought, the one at Mount Badon being the most famous, where he is said to have single-handedly killed 960 men.

He was a peerless warrior who functioned as the monster-hunting protector of Britain from all internal and external threats. Some of these are human threats, such as the Saxons, but others were supernatural, including giant cat-monsters, destructive divine boars, dragons, dogheads, giants and witches. He also launched assaults on Otherworldly fortresses in search of treasure and frees their prisoners.

Growing older, his character also alters significantly. Yesterday a great and ferocious warrior, who laughs as he personally slaughters witches and giants and takes a leading role in all military campaigns, he later on becomes less active, and more of a wise, dignified, even-tempered, somewhat bland monarch. He more and more assign his knights to do quests, though his prestige and past repute is never compromised and his authority and glory remain intact.

He and Mordred both fall at the battle of Camlann. He then is taken by ladies in a small boat to the isle of Avallon where his wounds were supposed to be taken care of. Legends did not say if he was ever healed, but no further mention of Arthur is made thereafter and noone knows where Avallon is. Thus, people believe that one day he shall rise again, or come back from Avallon, when Britain will need him the most.
