GRENTH, God of Death and Ice

"Came then Desmina, scorned and exiled by her people. And in her misery and wretchedness, did Desmina curse the gods for abandoning all who, like her, admired power and ambition.

And asketh she, "Where is the god to whom I may give my undying devotion? Where is the God to whom I may beg revenge against those who scorn me?"

And rumbled then the earth from far below, and with a terrible groan, split open. The ground grew white with frost and ice, and from forth the frozen earth spilled the rotted, skeletal minions of Grenth.

Appeared then the god, and with bony hands outstretched, welcomed the girl into His fold. Saith he, "I am your god. Follow where I lead, come whence I call, and the rotted corpses of the dead will be yours to control." And swearing allegiance in life and beyond, did Desmina thence become the god's first follower. "

Grenth is the god of Death and Ice. He is the lord of the Underworld and the patron of most Ritualists, Necromancers, and Hydromancers.

Grenth is considered the darkest of the Gods in the Universe of Guild Wars, and depicts his dark image with great efficiency. Although his body is that of a human, he bears the skull of a fallen beast. Grenth is often seen with minions crawling for his acceptance, for his followers are usually fanatic in his teachings.

But we know that he did not use to be the only God of death, so who is this mysterious God and where does he come from?

Let us come back to the story of The Equilibrium...

After Dwayna had found her the Truth in the Equilibrium, she was sent herself to meet with 'The Enemy', her ancient ally, whose heart was now full of hate, Lucifer... She had to expose her idea and feared a negative answer. But 'The Enemy' was no fool and understood the truth of the situation. However, 'The Enemy' in his Pride, decided that he had to have something that could consider him the 'winner' in the conflict between him and 'The One and Only'. He considered that the mess humankind was in was 'The Eternal Father's' fault, that he had been cast away and humiliated, and that he could not just agree to a truce with just a shake of hands.

Thus, two things happened that differed radically from the measures taken in the Heavens.

First, instead of retiring, he decided to split his cosmic self and divide his powers into every Demon of Pendemonium. Thus, every demon now had part of 'The Enemy's Identity. After all, Legion he was, Legion he had to remain.

Secondly, instead of organizing properly things by appointing one defined leader, he decided to leave his past followers in chaos, and to strive for a new Head. Having split his self into all the demons of Pendemonium, and being deprived of the pleasure to see humanity dwell in chaotic survival, he could now have the priviledge to observe his own demon Lords fight for Supremacy. And since there had parts of him into everyone of them, to him... It was the perfect outcome...

Dwayna notified the terms to 'The One and Only', who accepted them without much hesitation. 'The Eternal' was getting tired and needed well-deserved rest...

Constantly arguing in order to know what Demon Lord had to become Head of the Underworld, some functions were split between the strongest.

The most Faithful of 'The Enemy's' followers, his very Right Arm, Belzebub, was about to experience another doom, but that's another story (cf/ The Article 'Balthazar')

After years of arguing and fighting, three Gods (because that was now what they were) were appointed: Abbadon, Dhuum and Grenth...

But that was without counting Lucifer's perverse taste for ambition, whose inheritance had been the strongest in Grenth.

Grenth tricked the two other Gods and claimed supremacy of the Underworld. All the others, caught by surprise by the power of Grenth, and enterwined in a mix of fear and admiration, followed their new leader.

From this day, Grenth is eager to have new followers, especially when he can turn a a monk into a necromancer. Every necromancer's devotion to the Dead is answered, though things are not as organized as with Dwayna's Angels.... But things were never really organized down there anyway...

Though the ancient conflict between the Two Sides is over, and though noth sides are aware of the terms of the Equilibrium, Grenth and Dwayna still love to tease each other. And having more servants than the other has become a subject of honor for the two gods. After all, 'The Enemy's shadow is following Grenth with every pace....

Grenth has proven a fair judge of the dead souls, a god that has come to find that his role is to display the world life as it is, and Death is part of life. At the difference of his predecesor and partial creator, 'The Enemy', Grenth does not share common taste for trickery and deception.

As for Dhuum and Abaddon, vengeance is in the air, for such is the way of chaos. One leader always overcomes another...
