Guild Wars is what is called MMORPG, meaning Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.


What is Role Play, you're asking?

The interpretation of a role (role play), in a so-called role-playing game (RPG) refers to the act of talking and mimicking as if you were the character itself. It is closely linked to the notion of mimesis. The concept of role playing is close to the one of on-stage acting in dramatic arts, and as such, it is often used in theatre studies under the name: Theatrical Game.

Role play is often associated with the notion of 'character interpretation.' Identification faciliates interpretation, and interpretation allows the players of such games to fit more easily into the imaginary & fantasy aspects of these 'secondary worlds' (as Tolkien himself defined them) that Guild Wars offers.

In less technical terms, it is acting out your characters and when you speak, it is not you but your character speaking. You are acting out a role, as if in a movie.
